According to the International Energy Association, consumers spent $120 billion on electric cars in 2020, which is a 50% increase from 2019. Despite slower spending in the last year, EV purchases are on the rise. With this increase, many manufacturers are looking to release cars sooner than later. Two of the EV sedans on this list are updates from last year’s models and the others are brand new entirely.
Read on to see what’s new in 2022 from top manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, and Genesis. All these sedans come from high-quality luxury brands, so don’t expect low pricing. Plus, every vehicle listed here is the first in all-electric offering from every manufacturer (except Volkswagen). Expect nothing but the best with these initial EV launches from high-end automakers.
BMW i4
The BMW i4 is one of 2022’s upcoming electric sedans. This all-electric car is an upgrade of former models like the i3 and i8. BMW estimates an all-electric range of up to 300 miles (i4 eDrive 40) and a maximum rating of over 500 HP (i4 M50).
There are many pluses about the i4 aside from its mileage and horsepower. As an electric vehicle, there are also zero emissions (which is a positive for the environment). This is BMW’s first production with 5G, making it the most “intelligent” version so far. The 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40 starts at $55,400 and the i4 M50 starts at $65,900.
These are two variants of the i4. The rear-wheel-drive i4 eDrive40 has 335 HP and a range of 300 miles. The all-wheel-drive i4 M50 comes with 536 HP and a range of 240 miles. This new electric BMW is a member of the 4 Series lineup.
BMW continues to impress, taking its place among other luxury brands going sustainable on this list. It sets an example for consumers with lots of capital and increases the availability of high-end options on the market.
Genesis Electrified G80
The Genesis Electrified G80 may just be the best value of the EV sedans on this list. The electric powertrain and estimated 265 miles of range put this ahead of the original gas-powered G80. The roomy cabin (a norm of many EVs) also comes equipped with extensive standard interiors. You get a choice of engines and all-wheel drive. The driver-assist features are also upgraded from the gas G80.
You can get this electric car starting at $48,000. Now in its second generation, after an initial debut in 2021, the G80 has moved beyond its original value-for-money becoming a premium car. The standard safety features, turbocharged engines, and available all-wheel drive make it pretty useful, too.
Its best feature is easily the battery. The G80’s battery is highly adaptive. You can use a standard charger, rapid charger, and super rapid charger with its multiple inputs of 400 volts and 800 volts. An extra special feature includes the V2L Connection, which allows you to outpower a charge for small appliances. Many EV sedans don’t offer this adaptability.
Mercedes-Benz EQS
Another electric car on this list of firsts: the all-electric luxury sedan from Mercedes-EQ. Based on the S-Class, the EQS EV sedan has sleek lines and rounded edges that optimize aerodynamics, performance, and efficiency.
You have options with two series variants of either rear-wheel drive (EQS 450+) or all-wheel drive (EQS 580 4MATIC). The EQS includes an Airmatic air suspension and free half-hour DC fast charges with Electrify America for two years. The EQS 450+ offers 329 HP and the EQS 580 4MATIC offers 516 HP. Right now, the battery drive range is yet to be released by the automaker.
The Mercedes-EQ EQS 450+ starts at a little over $102,000 and the Mercedes-EQ EQS 580 4MATIC begins at around $119,000. With the luxurious Pinnacle trim, the EQS 580 4MATIC starts at a little above $125,000.
Volkswagen ID.4
The VW ID.4 is a top-of-the-line electric car that was recently awarded the 2021 World Car of the Year. Although another version of this vehicle has been released (for just under $40,000), VW is releasing an update. The updated ID.4 comes with a range of 260 miles. There are three available vehicle classes of the Volkswagen ID.4:
- Pro, which retails at $41,190
- 1st Edition, which retails at $45,190
- Pro S, which retails at $45,690
For an extra bit of cash, customers receive a 12-inch display, a panoramic sunroof, a power-operated rear liftgate, and 20-inch wheels. The more you’re willing to pay, the more luxury options you get. But the base model of this sedan is certainly a quality electric car.
Keeping up with future all-electric sedans
These EV sedans aren’t the only new thing on the horizon. There are plenty more sedans, plus SUVs, trucks, crossovers, and more in store for 2022. Some manufacturers like Volkswagen and Volvo already have their lineups announced for 2022 and beyond.
If any of these cars caught your eye, some of the new vehicles are already up for preorder. You might have to wait on those released later in 2022, so keep an eye out for updates.
